When planning your content marketing, it's important to make sure you have a clear understanding of your company’s goals, so can begin strategizing how to support those goals with content.

Determine your audience. Conduct some persona and buyer's journey research to determine who has a need, pain points, where do they go for information and how do they prefer to consume it.
Define what channels you'll use. Email, display ads, pay-per-click (PPC), SEO, social media, public relations, etc.
Select tactics that will help you reach your marketing goal. If your target audience is on social media, don't place print ads and vice versa.
Set your deadlines. Determine how long each step in your project should reasonably take to complete.
Set your budget. It’s important to know how much money you can spend on your project.
Build your team and assign projects. Make sure you have the right team members ready to work on your project.
When are steps/projects complete? You’ll want to document each step required to complete your project to make sure that you’re on track.
Progress check-ins. When is it time to check-in and find out how your project is going?
Determine your metrics. What do you want to measure to gauge success?
